As we reach the middle of 2024 - which is also the halfway mark of the Don Dunstan Foundation's 25th anniversary year - we want to thank all of our supporters for your continued interest in our work to inspire action for a fairer world.
We have been proud to present several key events over the last few months and appreciate the many people who have attended, engaged with and supported these important conversations.
Enjoy our mid-year wrap up, along with some other news, events information, and updates from the DDF!
Through the Dunstan lens, how can South Australia lead the way?
The Don Dunstan Foundation was proud to present the 2024 Housing Symposium last month, bringing together leaders across the housing and homelessness sector in South Australia, to share ideas, evidence and inspiration to shape the future of housing in our state.
Amongst the many thought-provoking and informative speakers was Alan Kohler, prominent Australian journalist, TV personality and author of “The Great Divide – Australia’s Housing Mess and How to Fix It”, who delivered a keynote speech followed by an engaging Q&A session. You can watch highlights from this special presentation by clicking the button below.
The DDF is grateful to all of the speakers who took part and gave their time so generously to the event, including Hon Nick Champion MP, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Housing Infrastructure, and Planning who delivered the opening address, and to everyone who attended and participated in this important conversation.
2024 Lowitja O'Donoghue Oration presented by Professor Tom Calma AO
Thank you to the hundreds of people who joined us in person and online for this year's Lowitja O'Donoghue Oration held during National Reconciliation Week on Wednesday 29 May. The Oration is a special event on the DDF's calendar each year and this year was even more poignant given the passing of Dr O'Donoghue earlier this year.
Guest Orator Professor Tom Calma delivered a compelling speech entitled "Looking Back to Look Forward – lessons from the past to influence actions of the future", paying tribute to the life and legacy of Dr O'Donoghue and shining a light on the vital issue of justice reinvestment.
The event also featured an emotional tribute to the late Dr O'Donoghue with the traditional Freedom Songs performed by acclaimed First Nations musicians Nancy Bates and Vonda Last.
You can watch the recording of the Oration event or read the transcript by clicking below.

The Don Dunstan Foundation is proud to announce the appointment of the Hon Mike Rann AC CNZM as a Patron of the Foundation. Mike has a special connection to Don Dunstan and has been a strong advocate for his legacy over many years.
Pictured: Mike Rann
Mike is currently the Chair of the UK Board of the Climate Group and, during his time as Premier of South Australia, led a strong agenda in revitalising our state, through a new approach to planning and urban design, a major focus on addressing climate change, as well as large investments in transformational infrastructure, high tech precincts and transport-oriented developments, and major events and festivals.
Our Patrons are passionate about the values of the DDF and offer their support by raising the profile of the DDF by promoting our activities and projects. We were delighted to have Mike be part of two special events in 2023: the Dunstan Lectures co-presented with the Adelaide Festival Centre to celebrate their 50th anniversary; and the 2024 IPAA Don Dunstan Oration.
The activities and achievements of the DDF are reported each year in our Annual Report. Click below to read all about the year that was. Special thanks to University of Adelaide volunteer graphic designer Lucas Su for his excellent work in putting this year's report together.
